Avian Influenza
H5 Avian Influenza or 'Bird Flu' has been circulating globally and has now been found in Australia. This virus primarily affects birds, in some cases mammals, and rarely, humans.
Avian Influenza Guidelines
Due to the H5 Avian Influenza currently posing an infectious risk to Australian birds we have implemented bio-security protocols as advised by the government. H5 Avian Influenza is contagious among birds and can be passed on to humans.
Birds are no longer accepted in the clinic building
If you have a wild bird, please call reception once you have arrived so we can assess the patient outside & advise next steps – Ph: 3300 1533
PPE
We advise any person handling a bird to wear personal protective equipment including:

Gloves

Mask (P2)

Disposable apron or similar to protect clothing
Action
Government Guidelines for injured or sick birds are as follows:

Avoid – Avoid handling sick or deceased birds. Keep pets and people away from the bird.

Record – Make a record of date, time, location found and any observations.

Report – Report the incident to the governing body who will assess the report and arrange collection if require

Disposal & Disinfection

Dispose of all PPE in garbage bag & double bag for disposal.

Wash hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds

If soap is not available, use an alcohol based hand sanitiser and wash hands as soon as possible.
